I once read that your diet is not just your food; it’s everything you consume. In the spirit of ‘thought girl summer’, I decided to finally make a blog to reflect on this, amongst other things.
Since coming home from my study abroad and trying to ignore the unfortunate reality of spending all my time at home alone until uni re-starts, I’ve been consuming a LOT of media this month. Outside of the hours I spend on tiktok, here are some of my favourites:
MUSIC
My music taste this month (as with most months) is very Stevie Nicks heavy, which was due in part to the fact that I was luck enough to see Stevie (and Harry!) at BST Hyde Park and had the absolute time of my life. I’ll be listening to the setlist for the forseeable future and pretending I’m still dancing to Stevie with gold hoops in my hair and the biggest smile on my face.
I also have Stevie to thank for my discovery of Anna Calvi, whose incredible music has been colouring my morning routine this month. Watching her live was INCREDIBLE and I must know where all of her jewellery is from immediately.
Florence Welch has also been heavily featuring in my spotify this month, but that’s honestly nothing new. She’s got a song for every emotion, especially female rage.
TV & FILM
As someone who usually bans anything Christmas-related until at least November, I’ve surprised myself by watching Bridget Jones’ Diary on repeat and daydreaming about Mark Darcy. I plan to channel Bridget’s aesthetic when I’m back at uni for fourth year, and just maybe I’ll find my own Mr Darcy <3
I feel like everyone is either a music or a TV person, and I’m definitely a TV girl. I love having it on in the background when I’m doing literally anything, aside from reading. Motherland has been playing on a loop while I scroll on Pinterest. It’s one of about 5 shows I can rotate between in the quest for constant background noise, and for now, I’ve had enough of Modern Family, Schitt’s Creek, and Friends.
Perhaps the most obscure TV show I’ve found myself watching is Life on Mars, encouraged completely by my dad. As you’d expect, I complained for a solid 20 minutes when he first put the pilot episode on, but it grew on me strangely fast. There’s something comforting and nostalgic about the show, despite it being set 30 years prior to me being born.
LITERATURE
Since I finished my studies in Portugal, I’ve been on the reading grind, especially with my kindle. There is something so easy about carrying a whole library in my uniqlo cross body bag, especially in the sweetest case my friend Alys crocheted for me <333. While the back of my kindle is adorned with bow stickers and a sonny angel sticker, the books I’ve been reading are a little less light:
The Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Beekeeper of Aleppo - Christy Lefteri ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Before We Were Innocent - Ella Berman ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
War Among Ladies - Eleanor Scott ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Comeback - Ella Berman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Girls Are All So Nice Here - review pending! My last read of the month :)
I’ve had SUCH a good reading month!! I would recommend honestly all of these books, especially The Metamorphosis and The Comeback; it was so close to a five star read for me but what can I say, I’m stingy with those.
Thank you for reading all about what I’ve been digesting this July :)
I love this!!
FREYA! This is so good, such an interesting and easy read <3
