This was so sentimental. Right from the start I knew I would love it. I too wear clothes that were my mom’s when she was in her 20s and wonder about the woman she was before me. I was absolutely touched by this piece
"She was a girl once, with a wonky haircut and scraped knees" 😪 I am already sobbing. brb.
Okay. Finished reading. Wow, Freya, the talent you have is immeasurable. One of my biggest wishes is that I could be best friends with my mum when she was at the age I am now. My Grandad is 94 and has the biggest box of photographs and I spent hours rummaging through and seeing his life documented on glossy paper, and I immediately went home and printed all my favourite photos off because I simply cannot afford to lose them in a digital cloud.
This is my favourite thing I've ever read from you!
Ella omg it took me so long to finally respond to this comment but omg. That is the sweeest thing. Memories are just so precious. I’m so glad you enjoyed this piece <33
You are the most beautiful writer, Freya. This made me yearn for the younger me who spent her spare time scribbling in notebooks and sticking in scrapbooks. I need to do more of that.
From the title, I expected to read an essay I wholeheartedly agree with; had no idea I'd actually be reading one of the most touching and sentimental pieces on Substack. Freya, it's beautiful.
I don’t know if it’s completely unrelated but you remind me of the character from the Turkish movie with the same name “fig jam”
Maybe I’m just pointing out the obvious to you but that movie is not even popular here so if you haven’t seen it and can get your hands on it i highly recommend you to
Also this is my first read from you so i might be absolutely wrong
This is exactly how I feel about preserving memories - they're so sacred!!

Loved this!! I keep a journal too and I always wonder if my future kids will read it. If my mom had kept one, I’d be reading it for sure!
Thank you so much!!! <333
